Distribution: Occurring in scattered locations on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east across much of North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Old fields, wasteland, roadsides, and other disturbed areas where escaped from cultivation.

Flowers: May-June

Origin: Introduced from Eurasia

Growth Duration: Annual

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Description:
General:

Annual, the culms smooth, 8-12 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Sheaths open, smooth; auricles well-developed; ligules 0.5-1 mm. long; blades 10-15 mm. broad.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a stout spike; spikelets 3 per node, 1-flowered, all sessile and fertile; glumes narrow, usually awned; lemmas usually with awns 10-15 cm. long, but sometimes unawned and 3-lobed at the tip.
